More Than Just a Signature: Why Sports Physicals Matter
Whether your teenager is gearing up to play football for high school or your younger child is starting a local Idaho Falls Parks & Rec soccer league, there is one thing you can’t skip: The Sports Physical.
Every season, parents scramble to get that required piece of paper signed before the first day of practice. It is tempting to run to the nearest urgent care or walk-in clinic just to get it over with.
But at Bee Happy Pediatrics, we want parents to know that a sports physical (also known as a pre-participation physical exam) is much more than just a signature on a form. It is a crucial safety check for your young athlete.
Here is why getting your child’s physical done at their "Medical Home" is the best play you can make this season.
Urgent Care vs. Medical Home
Walk-in clinics are great for minor, unexpected injuries. However, when it comes to clearing a child for intense physical activity, context matters.
A doctor at a random clinic doesn’t know your child. They don’t know that your son had a severe asthma attack three years ago, or that your daughter has a family history of heart issues.
When you bring your child to Bee Happy Pediatrics on South 25th East, we have their complete medical history. We know their baseline. This allows us to spot subtle changes and ensure they are truly healthy enough to handle the stress of competitive sports.
What Are We Actually Checking?
A sports physical isn't just a quick listen to the heart and a tap on the knee. We are looking for specific red flags that could put your child in danger on the field or court.
During a sports physical, we carefully evaluate:
1. Cardiovascular Health
This is the most critical part of the exam. We listen for new or abnormal heart murmurs and ask questions about family history, dizziness, or chest pain during exercise. Sudden cardiac issues in youth sports are rare, but they are preventable with proper screening.
2. Joints and Flexibility
We assess your athlete's strength, flexibility, and posture. If they had a previous injury (like a sprained ankle or a minor concussion), we check to make sure it has fully healed so they don't re-injure themselves mid-season.
3. General Health and Vitals
We check their vision, weight, and blood pressure. We also discuss other health concerns and any necessary medications, like rescue inhalers for exercise-induced asthma or EpiPens for allergies.
Timing is Everything: Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!
We see it every year: a parent calling in a panic because practice starts tomorrow and the coach won't let their child on the field without the form.
Please don't wait until the day before tryouts!
We recommend scheduling sports physicals at least 4 to 6 weeks before the season starts. Why? Because if we do find a minor issue—like a lingering joint problem or a need to adjust an asthma medication—this gives us plenty of time to treat it or refer you to a specialist without your child having to miss any games.
