Is My Child on Track? Understanding Developmental Milestones
Is My Child on Track? Understanding Developmental Milestones
Category: Child Development / Well Checks Reading Time: 5 Minutes
In the age of social media, it is easy to fall into the comparison trap.
You see a video of a 9-month-old walking perfectly, or a neighbor’s toddler speaking in full sentences at the Snake River Greenbelt, and suddenly you wonder: Is my child falling behind?
At Bee Happy Pediatrics, we know that every child blooms at their own pace. Some are early talkers; others are early walkers. However, tracking "milestones" helps us ensure your child is developing the skills they need to thrive.
If you are worried about your child’s development, you are not alone. Here is how we track progress at our Idaho Falls office and when you should ask for extra help.
What Are Developmental Milestones?
Milestones are behaviors or physical skills seen in infants and children as they grow. They are different from just "growing taller." They involve how your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves.
We look at milestones during every single Well-Child Check at our office on South 25th East.
Key Milestones to Watch For
While there is a wide range of "normal," here are a few major markers we look for during the first few years:
2 Months (The Social Smile)
Social: Smiles at people (the best milestone!).
Communication: Coos and makes gurgling sounds.
Movement: Can hold their head up for short periods during tummy time.
6 Months (Sitting Up)
Social: Knows familiar faces and begins to know if someone is a stranger.
Communication: Responds to sounds by making sounds; strings vowels together ("ah," "eh," "oh").
Movement: Rolls over in both directions and begins to sit without support.
1 Year (First Steps & Words)
Social: Plays games like "peek-a-boo."
Communication: Says "mama" or "dada" and tries to repeat words you say.
Movement: Pulls up to stand and may take a few steps on their own.
18 Months to 2 Years (The Explosion)
This is when things get fun (and busy!).
Social: Copies others, shows more independence (and maybe some tantrums!).
Communication: Says several single words (by 18 months) and puts two words together (by 2 years).
Movement: Walks alone, pulls toys while walking, and can help undress themselves.
The "Bee Happy" Approach to Screening
At Bee Happy Pediatrics, we don't just check ears and throats. We check development.
We use standardized screening tools to catch potential delays early.
Why? Because early intervention works.
If a child has a speech delay or a sensory processing issue, getting them into therapy (like speech or OT) early can make a massive difference before they start school.
Red Flags: When to Talk to Us
Trust your gut. You know your child better than anyone. If something feels "off," let’s talk about it.
Call us if your child:
Loses skills they once had (regression).
Doesn't respond to their name by 12 months.
Doesn't point to show you things by 14 months.
Doesn't make eye contact.
Isn't walking by 18 months.
Let’s Watch Them Grow Together
